Preventative and Personal Development

Curriculum Intent

At Whinmoor St Paul’s C of E Primary, our curriculum, school values and approach fully support the personal development of every child in school. We recognise that the primary years are a key time for children to develop their own identity and aspirations for the future. As well as academic development, we ensure children are given opportunities, through the curriculum and beyond, for personal development. We understand the crucial role we can play in helping children to prepare for their adult lives so they can go on to engage positively in society.

Children are nurtured and encouraged to develop attributes such as cooperation, kindness, perseverance, courage and curiosity as well as an understanding of British values to ensure that they are fully prepared for life. Equality and diversity are promoted and celebrated throughout school and we are very proud of a curriculum which equips our children with the knowledge, skills and understanding to lead happy, safe and healthy lives whilst enabling them to develop their talents and strive for their goals.

We plan to constantly challenge children to think deeply about safeguarding matters and their own personal, physical and mental wellbeing. We value pupils’ questions and give them space for their own thoughts, ideas and concerns. There are opportunities across the curriculum to explore values, keeping themselves safe, relationship awareness, economic awareness, online safety, cultural capital and mental health.

The school’s PSHE curriculum covers both discrete taught sessions across all year groups and the broader school curriculum plus collective worships, which aim to provide constant and meaningful opportunities for personal, social, moral and cultural development and reflection.

Within the RE curriculum there are planned opportunities to embrace and appreciate the diversity within society. The school places a specific focus on celebrating and understanding the religions of the children within our school.

Our Vision

  • To promote the development of secure, happy, well-adjusted individuals who are equipped for lifelong learning

At Whinmoor St Paul’s Primary School we believe that every child is a unique child of God and lives in a world that God has made.

Our aims are to…

  • Provide a safe, happy and nurturing environment where every child can achieve their full potential
  • Provide a curriculum which is knowledge-rich, wide, progressive, purposeful & connects to our community & the world we live in
  • Enable each child, through fostering high expectations, to grow and develop intellectually, physically, spiritually, and morally in order to enable him/her to achieve their potential
  • Develop attitudes which will be positively helpful to the individual child, the whole school and to society in general, valuing all faiths and cultures
  • To build strong relationships with the local community, our city and the wider world

Our vision and values are theologically underpinned by the Bible verse

Matthew 5:14-16 “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden.  Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house.  In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.
